Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016.
From Malick Sidibé’s work one first knows the documentary photographs,
taken at surprise parties organized by young people fond of music
and freedom as the country prepared for independence.
In 1962, he opened the “Studio Malick” in Bamako.
Studio portraiture would constitute the major part of his work.
People come from all over to have their portrait taken by Bamako’s eye…
Noted at the first Rencontres de la Photographie de Bamako,
he is exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and then in major galleries and museums around the world.
He received the Hasselblad Prize in 2003 and the Golden Lion in 2007.
