German railway lantern – Hugo Zweigle Esslingen – DB 1951 – original signal/conductor lamp

A special and characterful piece of German railway history: an original metal railway lantern from 1951, manufactured by Hugo Zweigle, Esslingen and bearing the winged DB emblem of Deutsche Bundesbahn.

The clear factory marking makes this specimen especially attractive. On the metal reservoir it reads:

This allows the lantern to be dated accurately to the early period of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, founded in 1949. A beautiful collectible from the reconstruction period of the German railways.

The lantern is finished in black painted metal and has multiple glass faces, including colored signal/filter glass in green and blue. Inside is the removable burner with a metal fuel reservoir. At the top is a sturdy carrying handle with a black grip, making the lantern easy to carry during railway work.

Precisely the original signs of use give this lantern its authentic industrial look. The black coating shows wear, scratches, oxidation and signs of age appropriate for a functional object of around 75 years old. The piece has deliberately not been restored or re-lacquered, preserving its historic character.

The various doors and movable parts are visible in the photos. The loose inner mechanism and the original markings are also photographed in detail.

A special object for the collector of railway memorabilia, industrial heritage, Deutsche Bundesbahn items and historical lighting. Also highly decorative in an industrial, loft or man cave interior.
