Nicolas Righetti was born in 1967 in Geneva, where he currently lives. He has been a member of the agency “Rezo.ch” since 2001. After studying social sciences, he attended the Geneva School of Fine Arts in the cinema section and then devoted himself to photography. He worked for many Swiss newspapers. His travels around the world, especially in Asia, sparked in him a growing interest in megalok political figures and totalitarian regimes.

During stays in dictatorships, he developed an original stylistic treatment, which takes the decorum of power and plays with it. From these travels will come four books that won prestigious press photography prizes for some of them.

"Transnistria, in Moldova, is recognized as a country only by the Transnistrians, which does not prevent this former Soviet territory from having its own flag, its president, and a capital of its own, Tiraspol.

For most people, the name Transnistria evokes nothing. Those who know a bit of Eastern Europe might recognize a region of Moldova. For the Transnistrians, it is their country since its independence was proclaimed in 1990. A country that is however not recognized by anyone, which does not prevent this former Soviet territory, a narrow strip along the Ukrainian border, from having its own flag, its president, and a capital of its own, Tiraspol.

Time seems to have stopped in this formerly prosperous region where everything recalls the USSR. Many of its inhabitants, mostly Russian-speaking, regret the era when Moscow ruled over all of Eastern Europe. Life was then easier for them. Today, the Moldovan government pays little heed to their views and leans toward a European Union that the Transnistrians do not want.

In this beautiful color photographic album, Nicolas Righetti offers an original portrait of the inhabitants of this country that is not one.

Independent since 1992, even though it is recognized by no one, Transnistria, with its unlikely capital: Tiraspol, is a strip of land between Ukraine and Moldova, whose inhabitants have long chosen their side.
