In this painting the layering of the paint plays an important role. The skin is built up from multiple thin and impasto layers of white, pink, lilac, green and blue. In some places earlier hues and corrections remain visible; elsewhere the paint is applied thicker, especially around the faces, hair and shadow areas. As a result the surface changes when you get closer or view it from a different angle.
The work comes into its own best in soft light that falls slightly from the side across the canvas. This grazing light makes the height differences, brushstrokes and underlying paint layers visible. Frontal or very bright light can make the surface appear flatter. In cool daylight the blues and greens are particularly visible; warmer light brings forward the pinks and earthy layers.
Preferably give the painting some space on the wall and avoid direct sunlight. I hope you won’t just look at it from a distance, but also stand close to it from time to time—right there the paint reveals how the work came to life.
