Some descriptive elements:
" Andreas Gursky (born 1955 in Leipzig) is regarded as one of the world’s most important artists who use large-format photography as an expressive medium. A main focus of the photographer who lives in Düsseldorf is the gathering of people and the places where they come together — whether it is the Tokyo Stock Exchange or a mass rave. In spite of its realistic presence, the electronically virtuously retouched totals by Andreas Gursky, through reduction and structuring of the image elements, also allow an abstract interpretation; they always rely on an interaction between image-ness and abstraction. The generously designed publication concentrates on the artist’s most recent works, which are on view at the Kunstmuseum Basel. It features, in particular, two new groups of works that, in addition to landscapes, reflect Formula 1 races as well as the famous Arirang Festival, a precisely choreographed mass spectacle in North Korean Pyongyang. Exhibition: Kunstmuseum Basel 20.10.2007-24.2.2008
Foreword / Bernhard Mendes Bürgi -- On The Edges Of The Event: Echoes Of The Nineteenth Century In Andreas Gursky's Series F1 Pit Stop -- Beate Söntgen -- Pyongyang: A State Of Exception -- Nina Zimmer -- List Of Illustrated Works. With Contributions By Bernard Mendes Bürgi; Texts By Beate Söntgen And Nina Zimmer. Text In English And German.
