Angelika Platen (born 1942) is one of the most important German photographers in the field of artist portraits. Since the late 1960s, she has been documenting with precision and a keen sense the faces and personalities of the international art scene—from emerging talents to world-renowned icons.
Her photographs portray artists not only as public figures but also as people in concentrated, often intimate moments. Among her most famous portraits are images of Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Marina Abramović, Georg Baselitz, Neo Rauch, Ai Weiwei, Wolfgang Tillmans, and many others. Platen tends to work in black and white, relying on natural lighting and authentic settings—often in the studio, during work, or in personal situations. Her work has been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions, including the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, and the ZKM in Karlsruhe.
