In L’Ora Rosa, Valia composes a Mediterranean scene suspended in time. Under a turquoise sky with almost no nuance, a monumental palm tree dialogues with the powder-pink architecture of a villa while a swimming pool occupies the foreground. Only a few elements — a deck chair, a small table, a cast shadow — suffice to suggest human presence without ever showing it.

The work rests on a deliberately pared-down construction. Large flat areas of coral pink, terracotta and turquoise structure the composition and give the whole a brightness that immediately evokes the South. The geometric lines of the architecture contrast with the more organic drawing of the palm tree and the rippling surface of the water.

Valia thus transforms a familiar Mediterranean and Riviera landscape into a mental image: that of a hot, silent afternoon when the light seems to slow time. The space is deliberately uncluttered and the narrative reduced to a few signs, leaving the viewer free to imagine what precedes or follows this moment.

This exploration of light, modernist architecture, the pool, and expansive color spaces naturally situates Valia’s work in dialogue with certain investigations by David Hockney, notably around California and the pool, but also with the formal simplification of Alex Katz, the chromatic constructions of Richard Diebenkorn, and the quiet, cinematic dimension of Edward Hopper.

The frontal composition and the way objects become almost graphic signs also evoke works by Jonas Wood, Wayne Thiebaud or Gary Hume, while the free and sensitive use of color can recall the spirit of Mary Heilmann.

However, Valia does not seek to reproduce these universes. She gradually develops her own pictorial vocabulary, based on minimalist contemporary figuration, an assertive Mediterranean aesthetic, and a very personal balance between architecture, nature and color.
