The woodcut depicts the skin of two vipers and was drawn by Giorgio Liberale da Udine and then carved by Wolfang Meyerpeck for the Italian-text edition of 1604 of the famous herbarium by Pietro Andrea Mattioli entitled "De i discorsi di m. Pietro Andrea Matthioli sanese, medico cesareo", a work on which generations of apothecaries, botanists, and physicians have formed, in which part of the second book is devoted to some animals.
The skins of the serpents, that is the skin that vipers and snakes in general shed in spring, are shown intertwined by the tail with a double knot of the vaccaio. In the text the virtues that distinguish them are described; indeed the ash from viper skin fights alopecia, while the skins of other snakes ease various pains including toothache.
The sheet has a beautiful and homogeneous coloration of fairly recent craftsmanship and presents excellent preservation.
