As is often the case in Michel Suret-Canale’s work, this painting began with an improvisation. As the gestures and colors evolved, an old memory gradually resurfaced: the years when the artist lived in Providence, United States.

He regularly visited a collective studio where artists gathered to draw and paint from live models. On the way, the signboards pointed toward Downtown. The artist had been particularly struck by the arrangement of American traffic lights: unlike his usual European experience, the light was not always immediately beside the driver, but sometimes suspended or placed on the other side of the intersection. This organization struck him as bewildering and not intuitive.

In this composition, these urban elements reappear freely: directional sign, traffic light, crosswalks, silhouettes and vertical structures form a city rebuilt from memory. The dark figure in the foreground, motionless, seems to observe this space that is both real and imagined.

The painting is worked with particularly generous material. The thick impastos, the overlays of acrylic and oil, and the visible brushstrokes give depth and a great vitality to the surface. Deep blues, bright whites, and black accents structure the composition, while the small red light of the traffic signal provides a focal color tension.

“Downtown” is therefore not a faithful representation of a specific place, but the painted reappearance of a memory: a vision of Providence transformed by time, improvisation, and material.

About the artist

Michel Suret-Canale is a French painter born in 1957 in Boulogne-Billancourt. Hailing from a family of artists, he has been exhibiting since the 1970s. Doctor of Arts and Sciences of Art from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and former university lecturer, he has devoted himself entirely to his artistic work since 2004.
