Lucebert (1924-1994) - Le Sorcier Chinois

A striking work by the Dutch painter and poet Lucebert, titled 'Le Sorcier Chinois' - French for The Chinese Sorcerer.

The work presents Lucebert’s characteristic imaginative visual language: expressive forms, spontaneous brushwork and a dreamlike, almost mythical atmosphere.

Measurements: 69 × 100 cm (framed: 71 × 101 cm). The work is signed and dated in the right bottom corner. Its condition is excellent and the painting is framed professionally.

Lucebert was closely associated with the Dutch branch of the international CoBrA movement, whose artists embraced experimentation, spontaneity and freedom from academic conventions. His work can be viewed in the context of artists such as Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Eugène Brands and Christian Dotremont. Lucebert was also an important poet of the Dutch Vijftigers movement, and his paintings often combine poetic association with grotesque, humorous and fantastical imagery.
