Anonymous - Hagenbeck's World Circus in Brussel

Original advertising poster, dating from about 1970 for the 'Hagenbeck's World Circus' that halted at the famous Cirque Royal in Brussels.

While the name "Hagenbeck" today is mainly associated with the world-famous zoo in Hamburg, Germany, it was until the early 1980s also synonymous with a large classical animal circus.
Founded in 1887 by the renowned animal dealer and director of the zoo Carl Hagenbeck, the circus was one of the most popular in the first half of the 20th century.
Carl's younger brother Wilhelm ran a large circus, which after his death was continued by his son Carl and after his death in the mid-fifties by his widow Friederike.
"Circus Hagenbeck" remained a well-known name even in the postwar period thanks to Willy Hagenbeck, another son of Wilhelm Hagenbeck. In 1982 the circus finally ceased operations. (Source: Stefan Nagel)
