With this square-format work, Medsan brings Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hat Pirates’ ship from Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, into Venice’s Grand Canal. The lion-headed figurehead, the Jolly Roger sail topped with Luffy’s straw hat, and the red and gold hull cross paths with the Campanile of St. Mark and the domes of la Salute. The mashup plays on the meeting of two maritime imaginations: the Grand Line and the Serenissima, two republics built on the sea.

The rendering is that of an oil painting with thick brushwork, in the vein of Venetian vedutismo revisited by post-impressionist texture. The sunset sky is built from pink, purple, and saffron stripes, and the sunlit reflection runs down the canal in a procession of tiled gold and ivory strokes that imitates the gesture of the painting knife. The palette contrasts the canal’s water greens and turquoises with the ochres, earth tones, and reds of Venice’s Gothic palaces, punctuated by flowered balconies in fuchsia and bright red. The gondolas, blue and striped mooring piles, the flight of birds, and the arched bridge establish a classical perspective that the manga ship comes to strike head-on, in an assertive graphic flatness against the city’s painterly treatment.

This telescoping speaks truthfully about the two worlds: Venice was, too, a power of adventure, trade routes, and treasures brought back from the farthest corners of the world. The Sunny sails there less as an intruder than as an heir, and the contrast between its cartoon drawing style and the Veduta atmosphere makes visible what childhood and history share: the taste for departure. The work transforms a postcard setting into a possible port of call, where the myth of the open sea reconnects with a real city.
