With this square-format work, Medsan brings Kaneda and his red motorcycle — icons of Akira, the manga and the Katsuhiro Ōtomo film — to the center of a broken blue-and-white porcelain plate, repaired with gold. The legendary drift through Neo-Tokyo’s streets becomes a motif of ancient ceramic, somewhere between an Arita dish and an Edo print. The mashup resides in this single image: cyberpunk speed halted on a support that celebrates long time and breakage.

The entire decor is treated in cobalt monochrome, with the feel of a porcelain painter’s brush: the Neo-Tokyo horizon line runs in a frieze along the rim, towers, antennas and katakana shop signs laid in a single dry, nervous stroke. The bursts and swirls of speed that accompany the slip echo the ukiyo-e stylized wave, spirals and splashes drawn like a wash. Only the machine escapes the blue, in a brilliant ferrous red that evokes aka-e enamels. Across the whole, the ivory crazing of the glaze is traversed by broad veins with a gold-leaf finish, in the tradition of kintsugi.

Kintsugi does not hide the break: it emphasizes it and makes it the most beautiful line of the object. Applied to Akira — a narrative of a city destroyed then rebuilt, of a body that explodes and recomposes — the gesture becomes obvious: the fracture is the story, not the accident. Gold runs through the pilot, the motorcycle and the skyline in a single stroke, like a frozen shockwave that repairs as much as it tears.

A dense and graphic piece, legible from afar by its golden network and up close by the detail of its signs, ideal for adding a Japanese-futurist and cyberpunk touch to a contemporary interior, for manga collectors as well as ceramic enthusiasts. About the Studio:
