With this square-format work, Medsan brings Johannes Vermeer’s The Girl with a Pearl Earring, painted around 1665, into the vocabulary of Japanese ceramics and blue-and-white porcelain. The famous Dutch tronie is reinterpreted with cobalt brush on an ivory enamel background, like a motif from an Arita dish or Delft earthenware. The circular composition encloses the face in a medallion, then breaks it: the plate is cracked, rejoined, and the fracture lines run across the gaze.

The rendering imitates glaze painting, with cobalt blue in a monochrome that modulates from the palest wash on the cheek to the almost black flat areas of the turban and hair. The network of fine craquelure, speckled with brown points, gives the appearance of an ancient piece long worn, while the larger cracks are highlighted with a gold sheen imitating lacquer dusted with gold in the kintsugi style. Two accents deliberately break the monochrome: the slightly open mouth in a bold vermilion red, and the scarlet thread that descends from the pearl — the only vivid note in a world of blue. At the bottom right, the cartouche メドサン is traced in cobalt on a fragment, like the maker’s mark on the back of a porcelain piece.

Kintsugi does not hide the break: it clothes it and makes the object’s value out of it. Applied to Vermeer’s icon, the gesture becomes a commentary on masterpieces themselves, on their fragility, their circulation, and their constant repair by the gaze. The pearl, a classic symbol of purity and vanity, extends here into a red thread that resembles a wound: beauty does not survive unscathed, it survives—goldenly—through its fissures.
