Statuette of Ganesha
India, 18th – 19th century

8 x 6 x 4.5 cm
Very heavy for its size
This sculpture depicts Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, patron of wisdom, beginnings and prosperity, seated in a relaxed and majestic posture. The deity is represented with several arms, holding his attributes, while the trunk extends gracefully forward. The body modeling, deliberately ample and rhythmically defined by a rounded belly, accords with the traditional iconography of the god. At the base appears the small rat, his vahana, Mushika, rendered in a lively and familiar way.
The whole is distinguished by a decorative bronze casting of notable presence, highlighted by a simple yet effective treatment of the ornaments, jewelry, and attributes. The composition, compact and balanced, rests on a lotus-form base with a sober design, reinforcing the devotional character of the image. The surface features a very beautiful nuanced brown patina, enriched in places by light deposits of green oxidation, particularly visible at the base and in certain hollows.
Condition: beautiful old surface wear with light rubbing. Overall well preserved.
