With this square-format artwork, Medsan brings Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA's mascot born in 1991 under Naoto Ōshima’s pen, into the vocabulary of medieval stained glass. The blue hedgehog roams at full speed, quills laid flat by velocity, framed by a loop-the-loop and a rain of rings — the visual grammar of Green Hill Zone treated like a cathedral glass window. The clash is frontal: the video game icon takes the place reserved for saints, in a medium designed to tell exemplary lives.

The rendering faithfully imitates the codes of glass art: a network of thick black leaded lines surrounding each form, irregularly tinted pieces of colored glass, bubbles and streaks caught in the material, peripheral lead and metallic grooves on the edges. The palette plays turquoise and sky blue of the background against the deep cobalt blue of the character, punctuated by the blood red of the sneakers and the amber yellow of the rings; the track and looping unfold translucent greens and purples. The treatment of speed lines, engraved with grisaille on the light background, gives the glass a horizontal dynamism that classical stained glass ignores. In the bottom right corner, the cartouche メドサン signs the piece in katakana.

This mashup says something about our relationship to icons: stained glass was the popular medium par excellence, the luminous image that taught those who could not read how to read the world. Placing Sonic behind this filter amounts to recognizing that an entire generation received its formative figures from a screen rather than from a church nave. The traversing light, here simulated by the background brightness, makes the speedster a figure of contemplation — exactly the opposite of its original function.
