With this square-format work, Medsan transposes the most famous confrontation in the DC Comics universe — Batman and the Joker — into the language of church stained glass. The Dark Knight and his white-faced nemesis seize each other by the lapels in front of a colossal clock with Roman numerals, the hands frozen a few seconds to midnight. The composition borrows from the rosette its radiant structure and its pointed-arch, repurposed here to serve a comics iconography.

The rendering imitates the codes of glass art: thick black lead outlines that close each form, color fields crossed by striations, bubbles and cracks, yellow and amber sparkles at the center that simulate the day passing behind the dial. The palette pits two camps against each other, the purple and the Joker’s acid green unfurling into spirals of smoke on either side, the slate greys and the midnight blue of Batman’s cape occupying the entire left half. A border of red, blue, green and gold cobbles frames the scene like a stained-glass frame; on the ground, a wet platform reflects light in white dabs. In the bottom right corner, the cartouche メドサン signs the work in katakana.

The stained glass is historically the medium of sacred storytelling: placing Batman and the Joker in it is a reminder that these figures have become our common mythology. Midnight-close clocks turn the fight into a pocket judgment, the eternal duel of order and chaos suspended at the precise moment it might tilt. The light does not come from either character but from behind the dial, bathing them equally — neither saint nor demon.
