With this square-format work, Medsan places Son Goku, the absolute hero of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, at the heart of Gustav Klimt's golden age. The monkey-tailed Saiyan, recognizable by his spiky black mane and the blue-belted gi, is depicted not in the midst of battle but in his other legendary ritual: devouring bowls of rice. The emptied stack of dishes rises like a column next to him, while the entire background dissolves into a mosaic of ornaments, exactly as the cloak of The Kiss envelops its lovers.

The treatment mimics the contrast between a clean ink line, faithful to Japanese animation, and a lavish decorative rendering with gold-leaf effects that saturate every centimeter of the surface. Spirals, chrysanthemums, stylized clouds, seigaiha scales and tessellated squares form a Byzantine carpet where red cabochons, green, and peacock-blue are revealed, along with a few flashes of simulated emerald and ruby. The palette is almost monochrome — ochres, ambers, brass, rose copper — only interrupted by the ultramarine of the costume and the kanji 悟 on the bracelet. The bowls themselves are treated as porcelain with gold and blue-white decoration, and the red cartouche メドサン signs the lower right corner.

The mashup says something very precise about the character: Klimt gilded his figures to render them sacred, Medsan gilds a warrior who only asks for a meal. The gold here does not halo power but appetite, that stubborn gourmandise, that childlike side Toriyama never removed from his hero. It is a profane altarpiece, where Byzantine ecstasy serves perfectly ordinary happiness.
