With this square-format artwork, Medsan brings Kirby and King Dedede, the two cardinal figures of the HAL Laboratory / Nintendo saga born in 1992, into the sumptuous décor of Gustav Klimt's Golden Age. The entirely gold-leaf rendered background, its spiral columns and its seed motifs directly cite the ornamental vocabulary of The Kiss and the Stoclet Frieze. The Dream Land duo is thus projected into a space without perspective, where the video game narrative becomes a Viennese decorative icon.

The composition opposes two diagonals: Kirby, planted on the ground in a muted pink worked in gradients, inhales with an open mouth a trail of geometric fragments — triangles, squares, swirls — in a golden sheen, while King Dedede descends toward him from the upper right corner, hammer raised, red and blue cape unfurled. This cape is the real tour de force: on the red run spirals with a golden gleam, and the blue panel fills with waves and seigaiha patterns borrowed from Japanese printmaking, letting Vienna 1900 dialogue with ukiyo-e as Klimt himself did. The white kimono, the red-and-yellow chevron belt, the turquoise river winding along the bottom of the image, and the dark red framed border with an ornamental frieze complete a set of strong graphic density. The cartouche メドサン, at the bottom left, signs the work in the manner of an engraving seal.

In the center of the duel floats a slice of strawberry cake, the Japanese shortcake, the real target of this battle of indulgence: the whole mashup hinges on this shift. The eternal rivalry of the pink hero and the gluttonous king, reduced to their suction mechanism, is treated with the Byzantine solemnity that Klimt reserved for love and death. Gold, with him as with here, does not describe anything: it sacralizes, and transforms a video game gag into an icon.

A piece that is both joyful and scholarly, ideal for bringing a pop and precious touch to an interior of a collector devoted to the dialogue between high culture and popular culture.
