Description from the seller

Krishna Venu Gopala

24 cm height
Brass
19th century - early 20th
Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, in his form of Venu Gopala "the shepherd playing the flute".
Gracefully supported on one leg, the god is depicted in a dancing attitude, holding the flute (here missing) transversely near his lips. The smiling face, half-closed eyes and the stylized conical headdress reflect the elegance typical of wood sculpture from South India.

The work illustrates the moment of mystical beatitude where Krishna charm s the gopis (the young cowherd girls) with the divine music of his flute, a central theme of bhakti (devotion/love of God). The sober yet expressive craftsmanship, the frontal hieratic stance and the rounded volumes situate this piece in the popular tradition of the 19th century - early 20th, heir to regional styles transmitted since the Nayaka period.

Condition : Good overall condition. The statue has undergone a thorough cleaning resulting in the removal of a large portion of its original patina. This intervention has revealed a lighter and more uniform surface, with a notable loss of tonal nuances and natural aging of the metal.

Provenance : Portuguese Collection - Kanaka The Collection

Shipping : Shipped with UPS / CTT with insurance
