With this square-format work, Medsan drops an Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars into the heart of an ochre desert, in the direct line of Jakku's wreckage that opens The Force Awakens. Down below, a small caravan of camels crosses the dune without lifting their heads, as if the wreck of the flagship were nothing more than a relief among others. The cartouche メドサン signs the lower right corner, discreetly, set like a seal.

The treatment borrows from the grand Orientalist landscape of the 19th century — Fromentin, Guillaumet, Delacroix’s caravans — with a broad impasto oil imitation: the dune crest in the foreground seems carved with a knife, the white light clinging to its edge. The palette stays restrained to sands, ochres, burnt earths, and the slate greys of the shredded hull, warmed by a sky of swirling dust. The only saturated flash is the red cloak of the rider, a vermilion comma placed at the lower center. The sand rivers flowing down the pierced sides replace the cascades of the Romantic landscape.

The mashup speaks to the end of empires: the most intimidating war machine of popular culture reduced to a rock, colonized by sand like a forgotten temple. The scale gap between the upright prow and the three mounts does all the work — technology passes, the desert road remains. It’s a contemporary vanity, where the ruin of science fiction takes the place of antique columns in Hubert Robert.

A narrative and contemplative piece, ideal for bringing an epic, mineral touch to a sober interior, an industrial loft, or a collectionist’s office attached as much to science fiction as to landscape painting. You receive a unique giclée print: a pigment print on canvas stretched on a frame, numbered 1/1 and hand-signed, the only existing copy in the world.
