With this square-format work, Medsan makes Star Wars' Death Star fail in a tropical lagoon and leaves it to the jungle. George Lucas's orbital station, a gray steel sphere with the legendary superlaser, has here become an atoll: its concave crater fills with turquoise water, its hull spurts two cascades, and its walkways disappear beneath the palms. The motif of ruins colonized by nature meets the romantic seascape of the 19th century, somewhere between Frederic Edwin Church's landscapes and Gauguin's South Seas visions.

The rendering imitates the look of an easel painting: creamy impasto in the billows of clouds, a loaded brush for the foam, fine glazes over the sky’s gradients. The palette opposes a honey- and apricot-hued sunset to the deep blue-green of the Pacific, while the mineral grays of the structure and the saturated greens of the canopy hold the center. Three balance-toles — coral sail, nets, tiny fishermen — provide scale and remind us that the scene unfolds at human height. The cartouche Medsan signs the lower right corner in vermilion red, like an ink stamp.

The mashup speaks of the living reasserting itself over the war machine: the weapon capable of destroying a planet is rendered back to the planet, covered in vines, inhabited by birds and bypassed by fishermen whose presence no longer concerns it. The silence of this end of an empire is more eloquent than any battle.

A contemplative piece that is immediately legible, ideal for bringing a touch of cinema-imagined fantasy to an interior of a collector attached to landscapes as well as contemporary mythologies. concretely, you receive a unique Giclée print: a pigment print on canvas stretched on a frame, numbered 1/1 and handwritten-signed.
