With this vertical-format artwork, Medsan places Baymax, the inflatable medical assistant from Big Hero 6 (Disney, 2014), at the heart of a traditional washitsu, kneeling on a zabuton before a low table. The care robot folds origami cranes, these orizuru whose senbazuru legend promises a wish to whoever assembles a thousand. The scene is composed like an old Japanese poster, with a vertical cartouche reading メドサン suspended at the top right.

The rendering imitates and plays with the clear line of an ink drawing, even and defined, without hatching, inherited from late ukiyo-e and from screen-printed posters: flat, matte areas, no cast shadow, oblique perspective that unfolds the piece diagonally in the manner of Hiroshige interiors. The palette remains deliberately subdued—ivory, sepia, wood brown, bluish-gray of the partitions—to let the vermilion of the cranes strike alone, from the thread running along the ceiling to the tabletop on the floor. The ornamental frame with swirls and the grainy aged-paper aesthetic cite Meiji-era lithography, while the plum blossom framed by the shōji replays the classic motif of the window-landscape.

The juxtaposition makes all sense: the care icon, designed to diagnose and comfort, applies its rounded hands to the most fragile of manual tasks. Yet senbazuru is traditionally folded for a patient’s healing—the gesture thus exactly matches the character’s function, and the mashup ceases to be a collision of worlds to become a metaphor. The tenderness of contrast remains: a body too thick for such meticulous work, and yet a crane perfectly formed between its fingers.

A narrative and soothing piece, ideal for bringing a touch of Japanese-flavored pop culture to a contemporary, minimalist interior or to a collector fond of literate mashups. What you receive: a unique, one-off print, pigment print on canvas stretched on a frame, numbered 1/1 and hand-signed.
