With this vertical-format work, Medsan summons Tortank — Blastoise, the final evolution of Squirtle in the Pokémon universe — at the heart of The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the master panel of Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. The calligraphic cartouche in the upper left repeats the original title of the print, and the vermilion seal in the bottom right bears the master’s name. The water monster now takes the place where the sacred mountain stood: it is he, henceforth, who holds the horizon.

The treatment matches the language of ukiyo-e and woodblock printing: ink-ring/circle imitation, flat areas kept as reserves, wash gradients, and this dominance of aizuri-e in Prussian blue that made the series famous. The foam closes into white claws on the fishing boats and their bent rowers, while a rain of diagonal hatches crosses the entire surface and drives the scene into a storm. The steel cannons aimed at the creature’s shoulders, its amber eyes, and the small snow-capped Fuji glimpsed between two blades are the only accents that escape the monotone; the cream background imitates the grain of the original washi paper.

The mashup says something true: Hokusai’s wave was already a beast, a force that swallows men. Medsan gives it a body, a gaze, and an intention, turning an 1831 print into a combat scene. Video game culture here meets the imagery that nourished it, without becoming caricature.
