Description from the seller

Russian icon – Christ 'Not Made by Human Hands' – Spas Nerukotvorny – modern replica

Impressive and especially atmospheric Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Holy Face of Christ, within the Orthodox tradition known as Spas Nerukotvorny – 'The Savior Not Made by Hands'.

Christ is depicted frontally with a monumental cruciform halo, flanked by the traditional inscription IC XC (Jesus Christ). The face is framed by richly decorated drapery and the distinctive long locks of hair. At the bottom there is an old Cyrillic inscription.

This iconography belongs to the most important and oldest depictions of Christ within the Eastern Orthodox Church and refers to the miraculous image of Christ that, according to tradition, appeared on a canvas without the intervention of a human artist.

The icon is crafted on a substantial wooden panel and measures approximately 39 × 30.5 cm.

The work is in a clearly centuries-influenced state, with craquelure and wear; the central face of Christ has, despite its age, remained remarkably powerful.

A characterful Russian icon, with an impressive presence and interesting old Dutch provenance indication.

Object: Russian Orthodox icon
Subject: Spas Nerukotvorny / Holy Face of Christ
Origin: Russia

A special collector's piece for lovers of Russian icons, early Christian art, and Orthodox religious art.
