Dawn rose and pearl-like over the basin. Under the umbrella pines, a naked woman stands with her back to the viewer at the edge of an infinity pool, her hair in a bun, a long white drape held in one hand and trailing at her feet; she looks toward the distance where a small sailboat, at anchor, is cut against the disk of the rising sun. Semiotically, the composition overlays two mirrors—the still pool and the distant water—making the body the only vertical element in a wholly horizontal landscape. The discarded fabric speaks of the clothing left behind and the threshold crossed. The palette, held in the roses, purples and pearly grays, belongs to late Impressionism; the execution is vibrant, loaded with brushstrokes on the foliage and smoothed over the flesh, in the academic tradition of a back-nude figure.
