San Geronimo, a 17th‑century Italian Baroque oil painting depicting religion, measuring 60.2 × 69.5 cm, by Escuela Barroca Italiana.
Description from the seller
Title: Saint Jerome
School: Italian Baroque (XVII)
Style: Baroque
Technique: Oil on canvas
Magnificent representation of Saint Jerome, one of the Fathers of the Church, depicted as a hermit and scholar of the Holy Scriptures. The composition shows the saint in a moment of deep reflection while he holds an open book and directs his gaze toward the texts he studies. His anatomy, clearly naturalistic, appears partially uncovered and modeled through an intense chiaroscuro that emphasizes the drama of the scene, a feature characteristic of Italian Baroque painting of the seventeenth century.
On the table are arranged various elements typical of his traditional iconography: a book, parchments and a skull, symbol of the fugacity of life and of meditation on death, reinforcing the ascetic and contemplative character of the composition. The dark background concentrates all attention on the figure of the saint, while the directed lighting highlights the face, hands and torso with a strong tenebrism influence.
The work presents a careful brushwork and an excellent volumetric construction, especially notable are the treatment of the skin, the beard and the folds of the cloak, elements that contribute great expressive force and psychological depth to the character.
Framed/restored.
Observations:
The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In that case, we will need photographs of the imperfections to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.
Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by an extra charge due to causes such as being outside a continental territory, excessive measurements or weight of the item. PremiArt will not be responsible for this extra charge under any circumstances.
Due to problems at the Swiss border we are obliged to inform that shipments longer than 1 meter in length or height to that destination will not be carried out.
Because of the high volume of shipments it is possible that the order may be delayed more than three days, for which we apologize and thank you for your patience. If you have any questions about your order please contact us via internal messaging.
