VOLTA - "Green Shore"

The green rises to occupy almost the entire canvas: thousands of small, round strokes, light over dark, that flare where light can pass and fade into almost black shadows. A strip of sand closes the foreground, and beneath the water lies flat, also green, dotted with blue reflections. There sits a tiny blue boat there, with two figures barely indicated by brushstrokes.

The river view, once built to let the sky breathe and to place man at the center, here inverts the proportions: the shore looms, the sky is reduced to a corner, and what remains is the physical sensation of a still, humid summer, of a pause beneath the foliage before resuming to row.

Volta’s inquiry moves along the path of a return—not nostalgic, but active. The great tradition of European painting is the starting point: the period that each work evokes, from time to time. But the gesture with which this heritage is traversed is unequivocally contemporary. Color does not illustrate, it breathes. The brushstroke does not describe, it vibrates. What remains of the past is the deep structure—a certain idea of the body, of space, of light—while the surface is wholly present, wholly alive. Volta does not quote; he returns it: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
