Lotto consisting of two traditional betel-nut and tobacco carrying cylindrical boxes (Kun-it), originally from Burma (Myanmar), manufactured in Bagan, and datable to the mid-20th century (circa 1950-1970). Both objects are entirely handmade using the complex Yun traditional technique, which involves carving and subsequent coloring with pigments on a flexible bamboo core woven together. Box 1 (Red and Black): Height 12 cm. Decorated with concentric geometric motifs and side panels depicting the Chinthe (the mythical guardian lion). The interior is fully lacquered in the characteristic cinnabar red. Box 2 (Multicolored Black): Height 11.5 cm. The body features the intricate figure of the Pyinsa Rupa mythical chimera (a creature composed of elements of a lion, an elephant, and a Naga dragon) surrounded by decorative fiery volutes (Kanote). The lid bears a detailed incised figure of a court-dance performer (Zat Pwe) in period costume. The inside is lacquered in shiny black. Conditions: Good vintage condition with a beautiful aged patina. The objects are structurally sound and the joints precise. They show very slight and normal signs of wear consistent with age, including small nicks to the surface lacquer on the edges of the lid and base (all details are clearly shown in the attached photos). Interiors clean, exteriors smooth and mark-free.
