the original 1908 first edition of The Wind in the Willows was essentially unillustrated, carrying only a single frontispiece.
Hardback in green cloth boards, with gilt titles and illustration. Boards are bumped and a little handled. Front board has traces of an old water stain.
Inside, 10 colour plates, and colour frontis - all by Paul Bransom. Illustrated title page.
Paul Bransom (1885–1979) was a much celebrated American wildlife painter, animal illustrator, and cartoonist, best known for his finely observed drawings of wild and domestic animals. This book - and 'Çall of the Wild' by Jack London - are two of his most famous selections of illustrations in novels.
Neat ex libris to front, and ink owner's name to half title. Top edge gilt. Rough cut page edges. Illustrated endpapers.
