A maru-gata (round) tsuba worked in iron (tetsuji) with a bold openwork (sukashi) composition, in which a dragon (ryū) coils around almost the entire perimeter of the piece, encircling the seppa-dai nearly completely. The head, positioned in the upper right, is rendered with great expressiveness: open jaws with prominent fangs, an eye picked out with a small rivet or inlay, brows and mane carved as stylized cloud-like scrolls (kumo), and a characteristic cranial horn or protuberance. The body winds in an enveloping curve down around the nakago-ana, with the tail curling into a spiral at the lower left.
The scale treatment — rows of small triangular facets repeated across the whole body — provides strong texture and contrast against the smooth surfaces of the cloud scrolls and the open sukashi ground.
