Sculpture, ANTICO GRIFONE IN QUERCIA - 70 cm - Oak

This carved solid wood French bas-relief sculpture represents a mythical creature, identifiable as a griffin or a chimera. Details such as the feathered head, curved beak and wings suggest a hybrid figure typical of the fantastical repertoire of European antiques. The griffin, a hybrid creature with the body of a lion and the head/wings of an eagle, represents in esotericism the perfect synthesis between the earthly nature (earth/lion) and the divine or celestial (sky/eagle). It symbolizes strength, vigilance, perfection and the union of opposites, often acting as guardian of hidden treasures or of the sacred Tree of Life.
This large and rare sculpture dates to the 19th century, inspired by medieval or Renaissance styles.
