Daalderop KMD - Box (3) - Chrome plated - Three chrome-plated boxes.

Three elegant and stylishly designed metal chrome storage boxes, all with lids, from the period 1900-1930. Two boxes date from around 1900-1910 and are designed in the style of Dutch Nieuwe Kunst (Art Nouveau), the dominant variant of Art Nouveau developed in the Netherlands at the time. One of these boxes was manufactured by the well-known metalware factory Daalderop KMD from Tiel. The third box, crowned with a black bakelite pointed handle on the lid, is executed in the Art Deco style and dates from circa 1930.

The three boxes are in very good original condition: no dents, no distortions, no cracks, and lids fit perfectly. Only light signs of use in the form of faint scratches and very light oxidation of the chrome, which if desired can probably be wiped away. The original luster is largely preserved, and the interior also looks neat.

The company Daalderop was founded in 1880 by J.N. Daalderop. The factory produced metal household articles in the Nieuwe Kunst style, a somewhat stricter variant of Jugendstil/Art Nouveau. The main designer was Meine Huisenga, who would remain active for the company until the start of World War II. Klaas van Aken also worked briefly as a designer for Daalderop.
Daalderop experienced strong growth in the early decades of the twentieth century. From around 1918, household electric appliances came into use, which Daalderop added to its product range. The product style evolved toward Art Deco and the Amsterdam School. By the late 1930s, the company employed about a thousand people.
Daalderop combined the partly mechanized production of metalware with high-quality contemporary designs, allowing aesthetically very attractive products to be marketed at a relatively affordable price. The offered Daalderop box is very illustrative of this high-quality production; the other two boxes, whose manufacturers are unknown, fit the above-described pattern.

1. Oval box with a hinged and decorated lid, marked Daalderop on the bottom. Dimensions: length 14 cm, width 11 cm, height 6 cm.
2. Round box with a freely decorated lid with a finger loop, and with decoration around it. Dimensions: diameter 10 cm, height 6.5 cm.
3. Round box with a loose lid with a bakelite finger loop, and a decoration of a double line around it. Dimensions: diameter 15 cm, height 11 cm.
