‘Rivierlandschap’

Stunning, exquisitely worked watercolor by the famous Dutch Romantic master Antonie Waldorp. The work shows a classic Dutch watery landscape with sailing ships on gently lapping water. In the background, windmills and the silhouette of a church tower against a characteristic, dramatic cloudscape. It could possibly be Kinderdijk.
Waldorp is renowned for his mastery in capturing atmosphere, which is beautifully expressed in this work.

Waldorp became a precursor of the Hague School. From 1838 he devoted himself almost entirely to painting seascapes and river views, which earned him wide renown. His works fetched high prices. For example, he sold a painting to the King of Prussia for 4000 guilders. His painting companion was Wijnand Nuijen. And in the evenings of the art circle in The Hague he spent time with, among others, Johannes Bosboom, Charles Rochussen & Huib van Hove.
In Amsterdam, a street is named after him.
