This is the sought-after second edition printed-in-Britain (Editio altera), corrected and markedly enlarged with almost 600 new Greek vocabularies (priori sexcentis fere vocabulis Græcis, vix apud alia Lexica occurrentibus, auctior) by the scholar Samuel Patrick (subpreceptor of London’s Charterhouse School).

Dedicated to the celebrated royal physician Richard Mead (personal physician to King George II of Great Britain), this volume represents the pinnacle of Greco-Latin scholarly lexicography used in the enlightened eighteenth‑century institutions.

RARITY OF EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY BRITISH PRINTING:

Unlike the continental German editions printed in Leipzig, the copies issued in Georgic London were notably smaller in print run and aimed at the British Enlightenment academic elite (such as the famous Charterhouse schools or the university libraries of Oxford and Cambridge). This 1739 second edition is a testament to the golden age of British printing, financed through a unique consortium of the Fleet Street booksellers and printers most influential at the time (among them T. Longman, founder of the historic publishing house that endures to this day). An exceptionally rare volume on the auction market, much more exclusive and coveted by international collectors than the European continental editions.

The first edition coordinated by Samuel Patrick for the British market was published in London in 1727. This 1739 second edition is of particular academic interest for including the expanded revision of rare Greek terms that did not appear in the 1727 version nor in other contemporary lexica.
