Mid-Century Modern Ceramic Standing Ashtray – Smoking Stand – c. 1950s
A striking and highly decorative Mid-Century Modern standing ashtray, dating from approximately the mid 1950s. The design combines a beautifully patinated brown glazed ceramic vessel with a slender metal tripod frame and an elegant bamboo-style wooden carrying handle.
The ceramic body has a distinctive craquelé glaze, giving the warm amber-brown surface an attractive network of fine age lines. The chrome-plated metal top incorporates a push-down mechanism, designed to extinguish and contain cigarette ends and ashes while helping to reduce smoke and odour.
The tall, architectural frame, tripod base, wooden handle and chrome details are typical of the optimistic Atomic Age / Mid-Century Modern design aesthetic. Comparable ceramic and tripod standing ashtrays from France and Italy are documented from around 1950.
A particularly unusual feature is the portable handle, making the ashtray easy to move around the room — a practical detail combined with a very sculptural appearance.
A fantastic vintage interior piece for collectors of Mid-Century Modern, Atomic Age and Space Age design. Equally impressive today as a decorative object.
