Description from the seller
This is a Japanese Jūkken Suji Kabuto (十間筋兜), a striking decorative samurai helmet characterized by its ten pronounced raised ridges and imposing pair of large iron kuwagata horns.
The helmet is believed to date from approximately the Shōwa period (mid-20th century). It faithfully incorporates traditional Japanese samurai armor elements while displaying a particularly rich and elaborate decorative appearance.
The black-lacquered helmet bowl features ten clearly defined raised ridges, giving the kabuto its distinctive Jūkken Suji form. The large iron kuwagata create a powerful and immediately recognizable silhouette, while the front is decorated with an elaborate central metal ornament featuring openwork decoration and multiple circular fittings.
The helmet is further enhanced by richly decorated fukigaeshi and a layered shikoro, both displaying traditional textile decoration, contrasting orange and brown lacing, and repeated geometric patterns. The combination of black lacquer, aged metal, warm-colored cords, and detailed textile work gives the helmet a particularly attractive and authentic Japanese aesthetic.
Decorative details include:
Ten-ridged kabuto bowl (Jūkken Suji Kabuto)
Large iron kuwagata horns
Elaborate central metal ornament
Decorative metal fittings with floral and geometric elements
Richly patterned fukigaeshi
Layered shikoro neck guard
Traditional orange and brown odoshi cords
Decorative textile coverings and stitching
Original-looking aged patina throughout
The helmet shows signs of age and use, including scratches, surface wear, discoloration, oxidation to some metal fittings, fading, stains, and fraying or deterioration of some textile and cord elements. These imperfections are clearly visible in the photographs and are part of the aged character of the piece.
The exact provenance of the helmet is unknown. It is believed to have been made as a decorative or display kabuto, inspired by traditional samurai armor of earlier periods.
Symbolism of the Kabuto

The kuwagata was one of the most recognizable forms of samurai helmet decoration. Its imposing shape not only enhanced the visual presence of the warrior but also served as an expression of status, identity, prestige, and individuality.
Kabuto also continue to be appreciated in Japan as auspicious objects. Samurai helmets are traditionally displayed in homes and other spaces as symbols of protection, strength, healthy growth, prosperity, and the hope of overcoming difficulties.
Despite its impressive appearance, this kabuto is suitable for display and would make an attractive addition to:
Japanese and Asian art collections
Samurai and Japanese armor collections
Traditional Japanese interiors
Tea rooms and historical spaces
Restaurants, galleries, and cultural displays
Wabi-sabi and antique-inspired interiors
The combination of the bold iron kuwagata, ten-ridged black-lacquered bowl, richly decorated fukigaeshi, layered shikoro, and warm-colored lacing gives this kabuto a particularly commanding presence.
