Lot of 20 antique decorative wall tiles – 2 continuous patterns – ca. 1880–1910
Description
A distinctive lot of 20 antique glazed wall tiles, consisting of two different but similarly sized decorative series from the late 19th / early 20th century that pair well together.
The lot comprises:
* 12 tiles with a geometric ornament in brown and gray tones. When placed side by side, they form a large continuous pattern of eight-point rosettes, stylized foliage motifs, geometric bands, and a fine craquelé-like network in the background.
* 8 tiles with a rich floral ornament in black/gray, ochre yellow and cream. These feature floral bouquets, Rocaille-like curls, plaid ornament fields and round medallions. Together these tiles also form a repeating continuous decor.
The very fine and consistently identical line work points to industrially applied printed decoration/transfer under glaze, a technique widely used for architectural decorative tiles in the second half of the 19th century and around 1900.

Condition
Authentic used architectural tiles in a clear antique, used state. The photos show craquelure, discoloration and signs of wear, as well as chips and glaze loss along various edges and corners. Especially in the yellow-black decorated series there are localizable considerable superficial damages and white residues from old mounting materials/paint/mortar visible in places.
On several tiles there are scratches, abrasions and small to larger glaze losses. At least one of the floral tiles bears a clear diagonal crack/large broken fragment, also clearly visible in the photos. The brown-decorated series appears, in my impression, to be in slightly better overall condition, but craquelé, old buildup, edge damage and localized discoloration are present here as well.
Despite the signs of wear, the two patterns remain clearly recognizable and the tiles can be reassembled as a decorative tableau, wall cladding, or architectural salvage material.
The photos provide a detailed view of the condition and form an integral part of the description.
