Description:
Complete set of the major educational work by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, “Émile, or On Education,” divided into 4 volumes. This sought-after edition from the Revolutionary period includes magnificent frontispiece engravings (intaglio) at the beginning of each volume, all well preserved and present (see photos).
Condition:
Interior: Very good overall condition. The paper has remained particularly fresh and clean. Very few foxing or usage stains. The engravings and title pages are sharp.
Bindings:
Volumes 2, 3 and 4: Original tawny leather spine with gilt panels and motifs. Original title pieces “EMILE” well preserved. Heads and corners slightly rubbed with minor wear typical of age. Bindings very solid.
Volume 1: The original leather spine suffered a significant accident and has undergone an old artisanal restoration (spine re-glued onto a cardboard backing, leather losses visible at the upper and lower edges). The body of the work remains perfectly solid.
A fine collector’s copy despite the defect noted on the first volume.
