Jane Doe 5 by Raffaele Palmieri (born 1988), 2026, oil painting, United Kingdom, 41 x 30 cm, portrait, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Jane Doe 5 presents the human figure through an intimate study of closeness, gesture and physical presence. Two bodies appear intertwined within a warm, enclosed space, their forms partially dissolving into one another through Palmieri’s loose and expressive handling of paint.
The composition is built from a restrained vocabulary of ochres, burnt sienna, umber and muted flesh tones. Rather than defining every contour, Palmieri allows the figures to emerge through layered brushwork, softened transitions and dark gestural marks. The resulting ambiguity gives the work a distinctly private quality, as though the viewer has entered a moment that was never intended to be observed.
There is a strong sense of tenderness within the composition, but also a certain tension created by the compressed space and fragmented anatomy. The painting becomes less a conventional depiction of the body than an exploration of intimacy itself, where gesture and proximity carry more meaning than facial expression or narrative.
With its raw surface and direct painterly language, Jane Doe 5 demonstrates Palmieri’s ability to transform the human figure into a vehicle for atmosphere, emotion and psychological presence.
—
Originally trained in architecture and interior design, Palmieri brings a unique sensitivity to painting, where structure gives way to intuition. Working exclusively in oil, he builds and disrupts his surfaces with natural pigments, revealing hidden layers that mirror the complexity of memory, identity and the subconscious.
Entirely self taught, his work quickly attracted critical attention, culminating in his selection for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London just eight months after beginning his painting practice.
His portraits occupy a compelling space between observation and psychological enquiry, where each brushstroke becomes part of an evolving conversation between material, emotion and the human condition.
