Some information about the artist:

Anton Heyboer (1924-2005) was a Dutch
painter and etcher. The artist was born in Indonesia but five months later the family moved to the Netherlands. They lived successively in Haarlem, Delft, Voorburg, Curaçao and New York. Just before the outbreak of World War II the family moved back to Haarlem. In 1943 the artist was arrested by the Germans and was put to work in the Prenzlau camp. He managed to escape and fled traumatized to the Netherlands where he hid in Vinkeveen.

After the war Heyboer settled in Borger to live, only to travel around Spain and France later with fellow artist Jan Kagie. Back in the Netherlands and after two marriages, the artist bought a piece of land with a cow stall that he gradually expanded with various buildings. He initially lived with three women in a commune and later with five.

For Heyboer etching was mainly a therapeutic activity that kept him from relying on psychiatric care; “a form of therapy for when you don’t know what to do anymore.” In the late seventies Heyboer opened his own gallery and flooded the market with colorful depictions of people, animals, and boats. From across the country collectors and day visitors came to the gallery of the “Robin Hood of art,” where you could buy a genuine Heyboer for 100 guilders. In 1984 Heyboer cut ties with his gallery and the art world to work in solitude.

He passed away on April 9, 2005.
