The road starts at the bottom of the composition and occupies a considerable width in the foreground. As it recedes, its edges converge and narrow until reaching the point where the walker stands. This marked direction creates great depth and makes the road the main visual axis of the work. The viewer’s gaze inevitably follows it, tracing the steps of the small figure toward the mountains.

The road surface is formed by a rich variety of grays, blue-tinged whites, violets and subtle dark nuances. On the right side a even denser mass of trees and shadows concentrates. The canopies form an almost continuous block that occupies much of the horizon. On the facade of that building a small reddish rectangle stands out. Its warm color contrasts intensely with the blacks, grays and browns around it. Over the mountains extends an intense yellowish and whitish light. This light seems to break through the clouds and focus precisely at the center of the horizon. Its position behind the figure and at the end of the road makes the brightness a symbol of orientation. Although the surroundings are dark, there is a point toward which to go.
