Things that float
In this work, the scene is presented as a suspended rite outside of time. Two monumental figures, built through geometric planes and essential volumes, guard a small cup placed at the center of the composition. This everyday object thus takes on a symbolic dimension: it can be interpreted as an offering, a bond, or the receptacle of a shared memory.
The composition revisits cubist language from a contemporary sensibility, incorporating resonances of syncretic and totemic imagery from Latin American avant-garde movements. The austere faces, horn-like shapes, and the presence of the stars turn the characters into ceremonial beings, situated between the human, the ancestral, and the sacred.
The deep blue functions as a spiritual space where the reds, yellows, and earth tones reach an almost ritual intensity. In Guardians of the Cup, the narrative remains deliberately open: we do not know what the cup contains or what it protects, but its presence quietly organizes the entire scene. The work thus transforms the act of guarding into a powerful metaphor about memory, mystery, and what a community deems worthy of preserving.
