Inkwell - Silver

Splendid and elegant writing desk set / antique inkwell from the late-Victorian era, made in Sheffield (England) in 1896 by the famous and renowned manufacturer James Deakin & Sons. The set consists of two original period elements:

Stand / Inkwell center: Made entirely in Solid Sterling Silver, fineness 925/1000. Clearly and officially impressed British hallmarks on the lid and body: the Walking Lion (sterling silver), the Crown (Sheffield Assay Office), the date letter "d" in Gothic type (year 1896), and the silversmith’s mark "JD/WD" (James Deakin & Sons). Weight of the solid silver: 130 grams.
Aristocratic heraldic detail of high value: On the inkwell lid is finely engraved by engraving a rare and fascinating family crest depicting a bat with wings outstretched resting on a torc. A detail of very high historical and collecting interest.
Tray / lower plate: Made in sturdy metal plated with silver (Electroplated Silverplate) with elegant molded feet and a convenient pen recess. Bears on the bottom the four pseudo-hallmarks typical of Sheffield plated production. Tray weight: 382 grams.
Condition: The item is presented in excellent vintage condition, solid and structurally intact. Shows a beautiful natural patina and the usual light signs of time (micro-scratches from polishing) that certify its authenticity and age of some 130 years. It does not have deep dents or restorations. (Buyer note: the interior compartment includes the glass insert).
