Pair of antique stoneware bottles – Kränchen Brunnen Ems – Germany – late 19th century

Pair of two antique mineral water bottles in glazed stoneware, from the famous Bad Ems source in Germany.

Both pieces bear in relief the circular seal “kränchen brunnen ems”, with crown, the inscription “schutz-marke” as well as “k.pr.d.”. This type of marking is associated with the Prussian administration of the source after the annexation of the Duchy of Nassau in 1866 and is notably found on bottles produced at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century.

Each bottle also has a maker’s mark “35” in a circle, located under the handle.

Tall, narrow bottles in brown stoneware, with a side handle and threaded molded neck. The two pieces show natural variations in hue and texture due to their manufacture and firing.

Authentic overall piece with a fine old patina, signs of use, firing irregularities, and wear corresponding to age. The photographs precisely show the general condition, especially the bases, necks, handles, and stamps.

Important small clarification: I will not list them as XVIIIth century. With this precise mark “K.Pr.D.”, dating to the late 19th century around 1900 is much more defensible before Catawiki experts. A comparable specimen is documented as a pressed bottle “Ems Kränchenbrunnen”, with this same type of mark.
