Pair of Antique English Sterling Silver Vases – Birmingham – H&P – c. 1900

Elegant matching pair of antique English sterling silver bud or specimen vases, dating from around the turn of the 20th century.

Both vases have a slender tapering form, standing on a circular spreading foot and terminating in an attractive flared and scalloped rim.

The bodies are particularly richly decorated with elaborate floral and foliate ornamentation, combined with elongated vertical panels containing delicate floral motifs. The decoration gives the pair a characteristic late Victorian / early Edwardian appearance with strong Art Nouveau influences.

Both vases bear a complete set of English silver hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling silver (925/1000) and the anchor mark of the Birmingham Assay Office. They also bear the maker’s mark H&P and a date letter.

The matching hallmarks, dimensions and decoration indicate that the two vases were made as a pair.
