HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The literature dedicated to discernment of the spirit occupied a central place in Counter-Reformation religious culture. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, confessors, preachers, and spiritual directors developed a broad range of cases aimed at distinguishing true devotion from illusions, ascetic excess, and the deceptions of conscience. Stadiera’s work fully belongs to this tradition and constitutes a particularly extensive testimony. The concept of “deception” is applied to the different moments of Christian life, turning the book into a true manual of moral and spiritual analysis. The substantial length, over eight hundred pages, testifies to the systematic ambition of the work.

THE AUTHOR
Francesco Stadiera, a Jesuit from Bologna, was born in 1574 and entered the Society of Jesus at the end of the 16th century. His activity fits into the great era of Jesuit preaching and spiritual direction. He died in 1630. The Illusions of the Via Spirituale represents his most significant work and went through several editions, attestation of the text’s fortune in religious circles and its use as a tool for formation, preaching, and direction of consciences.

THE PRINTER
Paolo Baglioni belonged to the well-known family of Venetian printers and booksellers Baglioni, active for a long time in the production and diffusion of books in the Serenissima. The printing house developed a notable specialization in religious, liturgical, and devotional production, destined for both the Venetian market and broader Italian and European circulation. The large woodcut mark on the frontispiece is one of the most visually striking elements of the edition.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Illusions of the Via Spirituale constitutes a significant testament to the seventeenth-century conception of conscience and spiritual direction.
