17th-century altar candlestick / church candlestick – brass/bronze – about 48 cm
Exceptionally fine and imposing 17th-century altar candlestick, executed in a copper alloy, presumably brass or bronze.
The candlestick features a richly decorated tripartite base with on each side a nicely worked Renaissance mask, surrounded by symmetrical volutes and stylized leaf ornaments. The three sturdy legs end in rounded feet.
Above the tripod there is a tall, profiled, baluster-shaped shaft with several turned and fluted decorative elements. The wide round drip pan carries a long central candle bore.
The design, ornamentation and proportions are characteristic of European Renaissance of the 16th century and give the candlestick a pronounced ecclesiastical and monumental character.
The underside is open and reveals the inner side of the old casting. The surface has a beautiful warm gold-brown patina and clear signs of age and use, including localized wear, discolorations, minor irregularities and oxidation. These are appropriate to the object’s great age and contribute to its authentic character.
