Decorative pair of large wooden Spekulatius moulds from Europe, dating to 1970–1980, each 49 cm high, 18 cm wide and 2 cm deep, made of wood and branded BEKA Inter Mercant.
Description from the seller
A decorative and unusually large pair of carved wooden Spekulatius cookie moulds, dating from the mid-20th century and bearing the BEKA INTER MERCANT branded mark.
Each rectangular mould is deeply carved with a full-length male figure in elaborate historical costume. One depicts a figure holding a polearm, while the companion mould depicts a musician playing a stringed instrument. The figures are particularly detailed, with carefully carved facial features, elaborate headwear, patterned clothing, footwear and accessories.
The substantial size of the moulds and the strongly defined carving give the pair considerable decorative presence. The darker patination within the carved areas contrasts attractively with the warm natural tone of the surrounding wood, emphasising the intricate designs. Both moulds bear the original branded “BEKA INTER MERCANT” mark to the reverse.
The moulds remain in good vintage condition, with minor surface wear, marks, colour variations and natural signs of age and use. Hanging holes and hanging cords are present to the reverse. Please refer carefully to the photographs, which form an integral part of the description.
An attractive and unusual pair of large figural wooden Spekulatius moulds, appealing both as traditional baking implements and as highly decorative examples of European folk art.
