Vintage Happylight Ufo table lamp in steel, dating from 1980–1990, made in the Netherlands.
Description from the seller
A special vintage Happylight table lamp with a highly recognizable, sculptural design. The combination of the large dome-shaped shade, the slim vertical supports, and the wide round base gives the lamp an elegant and almost architectural appearance.
The large, gently curved shade forms the visual focal point of the design. Under the shade there is a central, funnel-shaped reflector that distributes light upward and around. This results in no harsh direct light, but rather a pleasant and atmospheric illumination, with the underside of the shade nicely illuminated. When the lamp is switched on, the geometric shapes of the design come into their own in a particularly striking way.
The entirely white finish enhances the minimalist character. The design clearly draws on Space Age, Mid-Century Modern, and modernist lighting influences, making it suitable for both a vintage interior and a contemporary minimalist setting. Even when the lamp is off, its distinctive silhouette makes it a decorative object.
Operation and lighting
At the top of the cylindrical base there is a practical toggle switch. The various markings on the switch are still visible. The lamp is equipped with an electrical cord and has been tested and proven to work. In the photos the lamp is shown both up close and switched on, so the construction and light distribution can be assessed well.
The lighting beneath the wide shade creates a warm, tranquil atmosphere and makes this lamp particularly suitable as an ambiance lamp on, for example, a sideboard, side table, low cabinet, or a spacious coffee table.
Design
The construction consists of a broad round base on which a cylindrical section houses the controls. From the base, several slim vertical elements rise. In the center there is a larger vertical post with a funnel-shaped reflector that flares upward. Above that is the characteristic wide dome shade with a small round knob on the top.
Because of this arrangement the large shade seems to float above the base. From different viewing angles the line quality of the supports changes, giving the lamp a particularly spatial character.
The styling is typical of the futuristic design aesthetic associated with Space Age design: rounded shapes, a relatively simple color scheme, and a combination of technical and organic elements.
